When no document type was indicated in the file, HTML 4.01 was used for validating purposes since it has the most liberal DTD.
The files were fetched from the various sites using wget, a convenient Linux utility. The full command was wget -H -nv --output-file=log.txt -r --level=1 --user-agent="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 98) Opera 5.5 [en]" http://www.msn.com.
The MSN home page contained a few more links that did not result in any usable files being generated and were therefore not examined in this study.
